Chainsaw Man:Masterpiece of Fujimoto

Introduction

Today, I want to talk about a series I love: Chainsaw Man. If you’ve never heard the name before and aren’t into manga, you’re probably thinking, “What kind of ridiculous title is that? Why would anyone write something like this?” Honestly, even as someone who’s into anime and manga, I found it weird at first. Once you dive into this world, you start to understand the wild imagination of our Japanese senpais, but they never fail to surprise you. Just when you think, “Okay, this is too much,” they prove you wrong—and they’ll keep doing it. Chainsaw Man is one of those unique gems.

What’s Chainsaw Man About?

Our story begins with Denji, an unlucky orphan, waiting by his father’s grave. His father owed money to the Yakuza, and now the debt has fallen on Denji—who’s just a kid. A mob boss threatens him, demanding he pay up, then leaves. At this point, Denji meets Pochita, who becomes his only friend. Pochita looks like an adorable dog with a chainsaw for a head, but he’s actually a devil—the Chainsaw Devil, to be exact. After a brutal fight in Hell, Pochita was severely injured and forced into this weaker form. He makes a deal with Denji, and from that day on, they live together, and so the story begins.

Denji and Pochita team up to hunt devils, trying to pay off the Yakuza debt. Of course, it’s not that simple. Denji even sells his organs to settle the debt, but it’s hopeless. In one heartbreaking manga panel, Denji shares his dreams with Pochita—only for the mob boss to call him for another “job.” Naturally, Denji goes, but it’s a trap. The Yakuza have made a deal with a Zombie Devil, which turns people into zombies. As greedy as ever, the mobsters brutally murder Denji, chop him up, and dump him in a trash bin.

At this point, you’re thinking, “Wait, is the MC dead? Just like that?” Devils can regenerate with blood—and that’s exactly what happens. Denji’s blood reaches Pochita, who takes over his heart and revives him. Now, Denji becomes a hybrid. Pochita makes one final deal: “I’ll give you my heart, but you must show me your dreams.” After a brief emotional moment, Denji slaughters all his enemies and collapses from exhaustion. Just as he’s about to pass out, Makima—the waifu of many fans—arrives, catching him before he falls. For Denji, who’s never been hugged before, this is life-changing. From that moment on, he’s ready to do whatever Makima says. Not like he has a choice—as a hybrid, he can be killed if he disobeys. And so, Denji becomes Makima’s loyal dog, stepping into a new life.

Public Safety and a New Life

In the world of Chainsaw Man, Japan has an organization called Public Safety, whose mission is to fight devils. And how do they fight devils? By using other devils. Yeah, it’s pretty ironic, but devils can help humans under certain contracts. Of course, those contracts come at a price.

Public Safety is divided into different divisions, with civilian devil hunters assisting them. Our boy Denji gets assigned to a special squad handpicked by Makima. And what’s Denji’s goal in all this? Just to live a comfortable life and finally get some girls. The guy’s so deprived that one of his biggest dreams is to eat bread with jam. Let that sink in.

Denji vs. Aki: The Ultimate Bromance (or Rivalry?)

Makima is such a mesmerizing woman that Denji—who’s had zero interaction with girls his whole life—falls for her instantly. One playful glance from her, and he’s done for. But there’s a problem: Aki Hayakawa, another devil hunter, also has feelings for Makima. Since Aki is experienced, Makima puts him in charge of training Denji.

During their first outing, Aki tells Denji to quit the job. Like hell, our guy’s gonna give up this life! Aki drags him into an alley, beats him up, and flicks his cigarette onto him. Now, you’d expect a typical hero to take the high road, but Denji? He’s built different. As Aki walks away, lighting another cigarette, Denji knees him right in the family jewels“Dude, that’s not how bros settle things!”

Later, the two show up at Makima’s office, bruised and filthy. Makima, misinterpreting their bonding moment, decides they’re getting along so well that she sends Denji to live with Aki. And soon, a third member joins the squad, completing the classic “trio trope”Chainsaw Man style.

Chainsaw Man Arcs

In anime and manga, an “arc” refers to a self-contained segment of the story focused on a specific plot or theme. Chainsaw Man is no exception—each arc delivers its own wild ride while advancing the bigger narrative.

  • Intro Arc
  • Bat Devil Arc
  • Eternity Devil Arc
  • Katana Man Arc
  • Bomb Girl Arc
  • International Assassins Arc
  • Gun Devil Arc
  • Control Devil Arc

Part 2: Academy Saga

Chainsaw Man Characters

The series is packed with unconventional, unforgettable characters who break the mold—especially its protagonist, Denji, who’s nothing like your typical shounen hero. Instead of grand ambitions, he’s driven by hilariously relatable (and often absurd) desires. Here’s a look at the core cast

Makima

  • The Enigmatic Waifu (and Walking Red Flag)
    • Signature Traits:
      • Crimson hair, towering height, and hypnotic, otherworldly eyes (which hold major plot significance).
      • Dominant aura with a calm, calculating demeanor.
    • Role:
      • Leader of Public Safety’s special squad; recruits Denji after his rebirth.
      • Provides him with shelter, food, and a twisted sense of “family.”
    • Why She’s Terrifying:
      • Her true motives are shrouded in mystery (and nightmares).
      • Controls others with eerie ease—love, fear, or something worse?
    • Fan Nickname: “Mommy Makima” (despite the danger).

Power

  • The Chaotic Fiend
    • A blood-obsessed, narcissistic Fiend (devil in a human body).
    • Claims to be the “greatest human ever” (she’s not).
    • Dynamic with Denji: Roommates, rivals, and reluctant allies.

Aki Hayakawa

  • The Stoic Tragic Hero
    • seasoned devil hunter driven by revenge.
    • Forced to mentor Denji—cue explosive clashes.
    • Carries a cursed sword and has a cigarette habit.

Unforgettable Opening & Ending Themes

Anime openings (OPs) and endings (EDs) are iconic—they set the tone, tease the story, and sometimes spoil everything in just 90 seconds. But Chainsaw Man? Oh, it doesn’t play by the rules.

Who is Tatsuki Fujimoto?

Born on October 10, 1993, Tatsuki Fujimoto is the creator of manga such as Fire Punch, Look Back, and Goodbye, Eri. His current ongoing project is Chainsaw Man. In addition to these, he has also written several one-shots.

Fujimoto is quite an unusual figure. His works are both unconventional and unpredictable, making it nearly impossible for readers to foresee how events will unfold. He continues to shock us with every chapter. His willingness to push boundaries by incorporating elements of sexuality and violence in his stories makes him, in my opinion, a truly unique author.
