Gibi is a popular Turkish comedy series, but unlike most TV shows, it doesn’t follow a linear or chronological storyline. There’s no ongoing chain of events, which means you can watch a random episode without worrying about spoilers. But İlkkan’s adoption is revealed in Season 1, Episode 7. So, if you’ve only been watching at random, chances are you may have missed this detail. Which raises the question: Where is İlkkan’s real family?
The Grandmother’s Letter
The episode begins with İlkkan’s grandmother’s funeral. His closest friends gather for condolences. While looking through her chest, Ersoy finds a letter. At first, he tries to keep it hidden, but Yılmaz ends up reading it aloud to everyone.
In the letter, the grandmother writes about how she used to beat İlkkan and how he wasn’t really her grandson. Naturally, everyone is shocked. On top of that, it turns out she kidnapped him from a hospital. Perhaps the funniest part of the episode is when İlkkan learns he’s actually 11 years older than he thought. He isn’t 28—he’s 39. Yılmaz then drops this legendary line: “How did you not realize, man? A person knows how old they are!”
At first, they don’t believe any of it. After all, his grandmother was old, and at the end of the letter she even blamed beating him on the work of demons. They assume she must have been senile. But İlkkan is determined to uncover the truth about his past. And so, the four friends begin their investigation at the hospital.
Are you the father?
From the hospital, İlkkan learns both his real name and his family background. His actual name turns out to be Tan Tenekecioğlu. He also discovers that his father is a very wealthy man. The group goes to meet him, but the father assumes Tan has come only to claim a share of the inheritance. After a brief conversation, he throws both Tan and the gang out.
They then seek out his mother, only to find out that she had actually taken him from a mosque. This happened because her husband insisted on having a child. But the adventure doesn’t stop there—it keeps dragging on in the most absurd way.
They visit the mosque and speak with the imam, which leads them to a mafia connection. From the mafia, they end up at a mechanic, and eventually, the truth is finally revealed. I’ll skip the in-between parts to avoid major spoilers. If you plan to watch the episode, you might want to stop reading here.
Theories About İlkkan’s Father
When they finally get to the mechanic, the truth starts to come out. It turns out the mechanic didn’t originally have İlkkan (or rather, Poyraz) either—he got him from someone else. And that “someone else” was a very famous figure. İlkkan was the result of a forbidden love affair, and his real father was a celebrity who had an affair. When asked who it was, the mechanic refused to answer, saying he had sworn an oath. But there’s a letter. Instead of İlkkan, Yılmaz ends up reading it. What he sees leaves him speechless, completely stunned. Meanwhile, İlkkan is casually chatting with the mechanic about cars. One of the apprentices gives Yılmaz a lighter, and he burns the letter, saying: “İlkkan, screw your past!” The episode ends with this hilarious scene, leaving us without the answer. This suggests that İlkkan’s father is simply too disgraceful to be revealed. Of course, some viewers wonder why his identity wasn’t shown or explained. But the point isn’t who his father is—it’s İlkkan’s journey to find out. His father’s awfulness is expressed not through words, but through Yılmaz’s reaction. And naturally, fans couldn’t resist coming up with theories. Based on İlkkan’s birth year, 1979, some users on Ekşi Sözlük suggested possible names. For example, Aydemir Akbaş is one of the names thrown around. Basically, any celebrity from that era who was known for scandalous affairs could be a candidate. The funniest part? Even the writers and actors don’t know the answer—Feyyaz Yiğit never thought that far ahead when writing. So, we’ll never truly find out who İlkkan’s father is, but that won’t stop fans from theorizing.
